Serhiyenko family
Year of foundation: 2003
Current members: one family
Settlement description:
This household was founded in 2003. The family bought a little old hut on an area of 70 hectares in Kovalyn village, Pereyaslavsky disctrict of Kyiv region. The household is located by the village, near a big pinewood.
It is currently inhabited by a family with three kids.
The family tries to maintain a lifestyle that would minimize their dependance on the city. Partly, this is an attempt to reconstruct the old rustic life. Partly, the family uses the achievements of contemporary civilization. The foundation is efficient interaction with natural environment, the ability to use its resources without harming it but with some improvements.
The entire family sticks very much to the idea that the progress of contemporary technological civilization is lowering the quality of life in big cities. Therefore, it is wise to move to the countryside, closer to land; this will make for better future.
Throughout the years, the hut has been reconstructed and expanded into a big house. Several new utility building (like sheds, barn, stables, and bath-houses) have been built in the area. With the agriculture techniques accepted in the household, a small vegetable garden produces enough harvest, so that the villagers don’t use engines or chemicals. The household is maximally autonomous: goats give milk, there are eggs from hens and meat of all animals; horses are used as transport. The villagers have invented many eco-friendly activities in their daily routine.
Back in 2007, Victor Serhiyenko has written a little article that is known on the web as “The Koshasty method” (reissued in 2010 with several subsequent issues). This was a detailed account of his transition to the countryside life. The article was shared many times, and many people have read it. It still has great potential.
One can get to the Serhiyenko family place several ways. Firstly, you can use one of their services, horse-riding expeditions in a beautiful landscape. An expedition lasts one day, and the hosts always show visitors everything they want to see. Secondly, you can come as volunteers. Volunteers do constructional, agricultural, and other types of work. They are provided with a place to live in, food, rest, and unlimited horseback riding. The best option is coming as a couple and/or with children.
